“But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.” Matthew 6:33

“ Even when we think we have life all figured out, we should still seek God’s way and ask Him how He sees the situation we are in.”
Way back in the 1930’s there was a timeless joke by a comedy duo named Abbott and Costello. During the sketch, Abbot is telling Costello about the players on a baseball field, who just so happen to be named “Who,” “What,” and “I Don’t Know.” You can imagine just how crazy the conversation is that ensues, and thus, this script became famous and an example for many comedians over the years.
While thinking about Matthew 6:33 recently, this phrase seemed to resound within me. “Who’s on first?” I knew that God wasn’t talking to me about baseball. He was asking me, “ Who holds first position in your life?” The scripture encourages us to “seek first “ God’s kingdom. What is God’s Kingdom? The Greek Lexicon defines this word as God’s “rule, royal power, and kingship.” In other words, we should seek His authority and recognize him as Lord over our lives and in our situations first before we speak with anyone else or move forward on our own. We should consult Him before we make decisions, and always seek His counsel. This honors God and acknowledges Him as King.
The second half of this scripture says we should seek first His righteousness- which is literally defined as His “way of doing things and being right.” Even when we think we have life all figured out, we should still seek God’s way and ask Him how He sees the situation we are in, because His way is always the right way. When we choose to take matters into our own hands, we are putting ourselves first instead of God, and setting ourselves up for failure.
So, the next time you have a decision to make, whether it be what you’re going to wear to work, or where you’re going to move, don’t forget to do a self check and ask…”Who’s on first?”
