More Than a Wish

” Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart ” Psalm 37:4 AMPC

God offers us something much better than a wish….He offers us a covenant. You see, God isn’t  a Wish Granter, He’s your Promise Keeper.”

Most people begin to take inventory of their lives in the transitional period between the end of the year and the beginning of another. As a highly task oriented person, I find that I move about my days, months, and years with a mental (and written) checklist. If I’m not careful to allow my life success to be judged by what God says, I can fall into the pit of allowing my fulfillment to come from whether I completed my checklists or not.
Besides these “To Do’s” I also keep a wish list of sorts. I suppose we all do. The wish lists of the past often become the failed resolutions of tomorrow, and visa versa. At some point in time, we all have something we wish for, whether it be a bigger bank account or a smaller waistline. Usually people put faith in themselves alone to make these wishes a reality, which is why most resolutions fail, and wishes seldom come true.

I know that was a little depressing, but hang in here with me and be encouraged! God doesn’t want you to give up on what you wish for. He wants you to change your perspective. He doesn’t see what you are wishing for as a “wish.” He sees them as a desire, and He earnestly wants to lavish you with His blessings and give you your desires. Psalm 37: 4 says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.” If we are left to mere wishes, our fulfillment depends solely on chance, much like the Wishbone Challenge I mentioned earlier. However, your loving Father, has a much better way.

In the garden of Eden when Adam saw Eve for the first time, he states, “….you are bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh,” indicating there was oneness between him and his wife, and acknowledging the covenant that is marriage. Revelation 22:17 refers to those who accept Jesus as Lord, as His bride. In other words, you are in covenant with Him. You are bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh, and it’s this covenant that provides a guarantee that your desires will be fulfilled.  God offers us something much better than a wish or a wishbone. He offers us a covenant. You see, God isn’t a Wish Granter, He’s your Promise Keeper.

The first part of Psalm 37:4 says to “delight yourself in the Lord.” The word “delight” here means to take delight and pleasure in God, and to pamper. So, how do we delight ourselves in Him? Jesus is the living Word. To spend time reading, listening to and studying the Word of God is to spend time with Him. So, to delight yourself in Him is to take pleasure in spending time with Him and trusting Him that He has your best interests at heart. He knows what we need better than we do and He understands our desires. Yes, God wants to pamper you. When we trust God to give us His best, He will outdo our expectations every time!
Today, wish no more. Trust God to bring your heart’s desires and secret prayers to fruition,  knowing that the very One who created you also placed His dreams and desires within you that He longs to see fulfilled more than you do.
